Originally built in 2000, the 106,000 square foot facility with a 200 meter banked oval was renovated in 2020 prior to hosting the 2021 NCAA Indoor National Championship. After completing an initial planning study that included a building addition and extensive circulation modifications that separated student athletes from the public, the project scope was reduced to primarily an interior renovation. The modifications included a complete removal and replacement of the track surface with Mondo Superflex Super X 720, supplemental LED lighting over the performance areas, new audio system, a second LED videobaord, new branded graphics and complete interior painting to refresh the primary arena volume. Exterior work included new TPO roofing at the north/ south low slope areas and select replacement of rooftop package units.
The resilient sports flooring was extended into the corners of the arena to provide a more complete aesthetic for the fans and graphics were cut into the flooring surface in multiple areas. Along with the additional lighting and painting, a new ceiling liner was installed under the purlins that significantly increases the lighting levels for television production of events in the space. The exterior of the building was also renewed with masonry cleaning and recoating of existing EIFS surfaces.
