Kickapoo High School Performing Arts Center

Springfield, Missouri

Phase 2 includes the addition of a new east entry to the school and provides a state-of-the-art performance theatre.  The gentle curve of the auditorium concourse is a result of a new entry that addresses patrons from both a north and south approach. The primary overhang is perpendicular to the concourse and provides a covered entry point for the new drop-off lane which follows the existing flow of vehicular traffic from the north.  The connecting concourse not only serves as the primary circulation between the school and the performing arts center, but doubles as additional prefunction space in conjunction with both the east entry lobby and the auditorium lobby.  Access and security is carefully monitored at this entry by the attendance office, located at the intersection of the two forms. During school hours, the students must pass through this office to gain access to the rest of the building.

The 900-seat auditorium has the ability to be “tuned” like an instrument by means of variable acoustic treatments and a fully functional fly-loft provides a real world setup for rigging and deploying full stage backdrops and scenery.  A 20-person orchestra pit is carved under the projected apron of the stage and restrooms, concessions and additional storage are also included below the raked seating area.

Not only does the project provide the school with an entirely new performing arts complex, but the space doubles as a fully compliant 2,800+ person FEMA shelter for this region of Springfield.
